Ascent Trip ReportAfter the previous day's Cima d'Asta ascent: today the good weather has arrived.
From NE, Costalunga/Karerpass, large car park at road highpoint (soon filled up on a Monday). Standard route involves plenty of semi exposed contouring, some easy scrambling, well paint marked trail all the way; final section is via ferrata, seemed like grade C to me. 4h up, 7h30 round trip including 30mins at summit, but folk were generally moving slower, so plan for a longish day.
From car park, followed chairlift access track to its top, then nice trail skirts L (E) of Signalkopf then R onto trail 517B which climbs to Kl Latemarscharte (pass), sign here says Latemarspitze 0h50, but NB this is the tourist summit, the main one is further on. Path initially climbs crest then takes a contouring line L, never difficult, always well marked but needs care in places. Latemarspitze 2791m is a small out and back marked with cross and cairn. The onward route is due S, down an improbable looking ridge but again not difficult, well marked, needing care as exposed. Trail descends back R to small orange Biv Rigatti hut. Trail zigzags up short scree slope to start of via ferrata, warning sign at start, cabling continuous for some distance, some passages vertical or almost so, an exciting notch, eventually easy zigzag path to summit, highpoint is outcrop 8m W of summit. Initially cloud but clears over my 30mins stay, very dramatic ridge, big cliffs and overhangs. Several other parties, some seem to have arrived via the lower level route (see eg OpenStreetMap), two I speak to who take the ferrata have come up from Obereggen, ie from W, avoiding the semi exposed excitement of the Latemarspitze ascent and descent. I consider the lower level return to the Rigatti, but the ferrata is a known quantity and fun. Nice return over Latemarspitze ridge, then from the Scharte I descend L on route 18, clear trail but delicate in places (exposed YDS2+), probably easier in ascent. Dramatic route and views especially of spectacular Rotwand group opposite. Sunshine but often cloud to keep temps lower, nice conditions.
Next day I climb another Dolomites classic, Cima della Vezzana.
