Ascent Trip ReportFollowed Nate Burkett's gpx file, which I found very reasonable and mostly on the trail. The only XC section was a traverse under the 8109 peak (a huge massive of black volcanic rock): it's a short section and there it's better to stay close to the rocks. Once you pass this section you could see a distinct trail going up and right. There are many markers. Another option to bypass 8109 on the right through the game refuge seemed to me far less favorable.
There is a distinct trail descending to the saddle under Mt Mildred and going up the Mildred's ridge. There is absolutely no need to bushwhack or to traverse the steep loose slopes. I've lost trail when I started climbing the last segment to the summit. One had to bypass black volcanic rocks on the left, but once you did this, you would need to go up directly to the second rock and gain the ridgeline again. There is a sandy trail up to the summit.
Overall a very pleasant hike in a scenic wilderness. It was very hot during the ascent, some thunderstorms and cool weather on the way back
