Ascent Trip ReportWe were staying in Burley, Idaho, so to get to the trailhead we drove to Oakley and then south on the Birch Creek road which quickly turns to a maintained dirt road. Then we took the road into City of Rocks. Just beyond the seasonal gate we took the forest road 562 north and followed it all the way to the end. This road gets really rough and you will need a high clearance 4WD. There is a trail here and it goes up to the ridge between the two prominent peaks. However once at the ridge the trail appears to go off to the less prominent peak and not to Cache. To get to Cache you must bushwhack and boulder hop through some semi- difficult terrain. We tried to find clear spots through the rocks and trees. You end up winding your way around like through a maze. Once at the summit we noticed some monsoon showers building up so we high tailed it back to our vehicle. Very pleasant hike with much more driving than actual hiking. The wildflowers were in bloom and it was quite beautiful. We did see a elk cow and a moose cow with a young one. We didn't know moose lived out here! |
