Ascent Trip ReportI drove to the trailhead on VT114 and found the trail very well signed, blazed, and mapped. Unfortunately, I found out while looking at their map that there's a trailhead on the SE side of the mountain that cuts the hiking distance in half and has two vistas along the way. I figured that I wouldn't get any views on thia hike, so I was a bit jealous. The first mile was low pitch, boggy, and buggy. There were parts that were overgrown enough that I was glad I was wearing pants, but not enough that the tread was hard to follow. The upper portions increased in steepness, only to max out at a moderate pitch. Clouds got dark after mile two and began raining shortly thereafter until I made the summit. The canopy helped, but my arms, legs, and feet were mostly wet. The summit cabin is run down, but is still a shelter.
The Sun came out for my hike down. There are two vistas on this side of the mountain, but the upper one on the double white blazed spur is seriously impeded by middle aged pines, and the one by the gravel pit is not super scenic. I got some glimpses of distant hills, but again, I didn't expect views today. This was primarily a hike for the lists. I did end up enjoying being out in the rain for once and dried off pretty quickly afterward. |
