Ascent Trip ReportWhat a day. I traversed from Penguin Peak to Abe's trail. This was a very long and strenous traverse. After Penguin Peak things got rather cloudly and windy until getting past Chinstrap Peak on the way down into Girdwood. I got turned aroudn twice in the fog and added close to a half mile onto my trip. Finding water was also difficult during the first half of the trip and I had to resort to boiling down some snow, which took a good half hour to get my hydration bladder back to full. By the end I was so beat I decided to bail out of Gentoo and come back to bag that peak later. I'm not sure if there ever was a trail from the ridge between Chinstrap and Gentoo down to Abe's trail, but I didn't find it. I saw one cairn above treeline and then nothing. I ended up bushwachking down a creek bed for 1/3 mile which took a good hour in my exhausted state and many devils club thorns to pick out of my fingers the next morning. All in all the trip took me 12 hours without Gentoo. The hike wasn't the worst, I'm glad to check it off but I don't think it's one I would repeat. Maybe on a clearer day it would have been more worthwhile. |
