Ascent Trip Report

Point-to-point hike over the Montalban Range. Dropped a car at the parking area on Jericho Rd and then started at the Glen Boulder Trail on Rt. 16. I've hiked down Glen Boulder, but this was my first time hiking up it. Really great views once you get above tree line. Hot & humid day, but tolerable. Continued on Davis Path over Montalban Ridge-North Peak and then on to Isolation. My 2nd time on Isolation. Much more rewarding than the 1st time 9 years ago when the summit was socked in with clouds and it had started to snow. Complete opposite this time. Continued south on Davis Path. We thought we missed the side trail to the summit of Mt Davis, so we bushwhacked to the top. After returning to the main trail we had egg on our faces when we came upon the side trail 5 minutes later. The AMC guide says Davis Path between Isolation and Stairs is seldom used and hard to follow at times. There was definitely lots of overgrowth, but only a couple spots where we had to question which way to go. There was some nice open spots too if one were to trail run it. Took the side trail to Stairs to some nice views from a ledge just past the true summit. The descent from Davis Path to Stairs Col and then Stairs Col to Rocky Branch was fairly steep. Would make for a tough climb. The rest of the way out on Rocky Branch was flat. The trail ends at Jericho Road and then it's another 2 mile road walk to the parking area. You'll see why the road is closed. The bugs weren't too bad most of the day, but they got vicious towards the end. Overall, a successful day!
