Ascent Trip ReportFrom the saddle with Lake Peak, we encountered a small snow field. While Rayleigh enjoyed romping around in the snow, Christina traversed the field to the west. From here, it was a straight shot up a grassy slope to the rounded summit of Penitente.
The views of Lake Peak from Penitente were nice, and I would argue that Penitente was my second favorite summit of the day.
We retraced our route back to the top of the Ski Area - this time following the Skyline trail in it's entirety and not getting off route the two times I did on the ascent trip. The crux of all this is the class 2 up and down climb just north of Deception Peak.
Once at the top of the ski area, we took FR150 for about 4 miles back to the intersection with the Tesuque Creek trail.
This was a nice day-hike - although we hit 4 named peaks, only Lake has enough prominence to count. I would probably pass on doing Tesuque Peak again, instead opting to just take FR150 to the Skyline and head straight for Deception. Penitenti is a worthwhile venture and I do like the section of the Skyline trail from Lake to it - I would summit it again. |
