Ascent Trip ReportThis was part of a trip pursuing county high points for an itinerary that ended up (adaptability and all that) including Modoc, Lassen, Siskiyou, Lake/Colusa, Glenn, Mendocino, Butte, Tehama, Humboldt, & Trinity counties. (As it happens, Siskiyou -- Mt. Shasta -- was the primary objective on this tour, and it was the only unsuccessful summit attempt.)
After waking up on Black Butte, I drove on over. Any vehicle can drive these roads. There are ruts and potholes but nothing too bad. At least, that was coming over from Black Butte. From Wells Campground I followed googlemaps directions that took me from Wells Campground down 2 miles of a single lane road with high clearance absolutely necessary. From there it was smooth sailing. Based on other reports there are likely better roads that are sedan-friendly.
The Wells campground was completely empty, as was the summit. A sign on the firewatch indicated the staff remain on furlough due to COVID-19.
Low clouds were scattered across the valley to the west, but bluebird skies were above. There is a survey marker on the rock outcrop by the sign. The benchmark in the foundation behind the lookout tower has been painted over. |
