Ascent Trip ReportThere is a nearly 500 foot climb from the saddle between the two big peaks. The views are special. The cliff bands are unique. But the climb from the saddle up to East is far easier than the climb to the West where the rock pinnacles and cliffs are more challenging but the rock is solid and the class 2 and 2+ is fun and rewarding. Careful route choices allow you to do much of this climb on alpine grass which is easier than the talus but the talus is well interlocked and easy to climb. More great views at the summit and every major peak in the front range is visible again. Then we headed down to the saddle between East and Peak 12644. This was the only tricky section of our entire route. There are some steep sections of loose talus and scree but the ONLY bad area of the day. Take you time and watch for rock fall on to people below. At one pinnacle of talus I downclimbed grass to the east and went around the talus and 5 others rapidly closing in on me thought they would pass me sticking to the talus ridge and were surprised to see me get way ahead with my detour. This detour on the ridge is shown on the GPS track where I suddenly veeered right. We stopped at the beautiful grassy saddle elevation 12,300 and HC decided to remain while Dan and I ran up the final ranked peak 12644. We met HC down at a ramp below the saddle. Again the routes were ideal on this track. |
