Ascent of Steens Mountain on 2020-06-22Date: | Monday, June 22, 2020 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Steens Mountain | Location: | USA-Oregon | Elevation: | 9733 ft / 2966 m |
Ascent Trip ReportBiked from the South Campground. 82 degrees at the start, but wasn't too bad and cooled a good bit as I ascended. Two hours to make the summit and then biked over to Kiger Overlook to try for North Steens. There was some kind of weather station on the "summit", which appeared to be highest point, but the actual benchmark is at the other end of the summit plateau. Unsuccessful on North Steens, turned around at 7:15 halfway along the ridge because it was getting too late. Riding back to camp in the dark, arrive at 9:30 pm (glad I packed a headlamp, or maybe I would have not even tried this if I didn't have a headlamp;). Great adventure and seeing sunset from Steens with no one else around (gates were closed, so no cars) was pretty awesome. |
