Ascent Trip Report

From Navigation Trailhead follow trail 291 (well maintained) about one mile to a point about 500 ft past the Boulder Creek Bridge. Trail 296 starts here but is nearly impossible to follow the first 2000 ft because it has not been maintained for more than 30 years. It's location is very close to the map location and is useful once found. However we followed it only to about 3200 ft and started diagonally up the hill and eventually gained the North Ridge leading to the summit. There are some sections with open woods, but it's mostly lots of downed trees with brushy sections. On the decent we we intersected the side creek to get water at about 4400 ft then traversed to the northwest to about 3800 feet and then followed close to the section line back to trail 296. A route from the south may not be easier because of the downed trees between the South summit and the North summit even though it starts 1800 ft higher.
