Ascent Trip Report

Access: I was able to drive my 4Runner to the summit using Dean Gaudet's GPS track (just going in the opposite direction). Dean's driving tracks are always excellent, and this one was no exception. The eastern route is definitely the better of the two since it is shorter and has better roads. Up to the points where the two routes converge, a sedan could have made it up via the east route, but some clearance was needed to negotiate the western route. After the convergence, it quickly becomes high clearance territory and the roads get progressively worse near the summit. Most high clearance vehicles can get you within a mile or two of the summit pretty easily, and after that 4WD and all-terrain tires are highly recommended to negotiate the steep, rocky road.

The Climb: This was a drive-up for me, but at worst it might be a few miles of road hiking if you don't want to abuse your vehicle too much. The summit has excellent views in all directions and I found a benchmark on the northern side of the broad summit.

My Thoughts: As far as drive-ups go, this one was pretty unpleasant simply due to the total distance on unpaved roads (over 50 miles) and the slow going during the final stretch of steep and rocky road. There were also dozens of OHVs buzzing around (probably since it was Father's Day). Nonetheless, the views from the summit are quite impressive and its nice to get a drive-up p3k.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so feel free to contact me if you want to team up.
