Ascent Trip Report

This was part of a 20 mile incursion into the San Gabes from Altadena. Started up the trail to Echo Mt as usual. Just a couple parties on trail as it was a weekday and early in the morning. Quickly bagged Echo and then I hiked Castle Canyon through the clouds up to Inspiration Point. Only 2 other parties at Inspiration Point. I eyed the next peak to grab as I hydrated and had a quick snack. The south face of Mt. Lowe is quite magnificent. I started up the East Mt Lowe trail which was very crumbly in the beginning due to the MTBs eroding away at it over the years. At Mt Lowe I there were two other parties, one of which was a solo hiker. I said hi and asked if he'd like to join me to bag Mt. Markham. He declined. I headed down to the saddle between Lowe and Markham and headed up the ridge line to the flat top of Markham. The use trail up was just slightly overgrown with thorny bush which scraped my exposed legs. Finally I made it up and enjoyed the views of Mt Wilson and Harvard floating amongst a sea of clouds. I headed back down and jogged the level trail to Markham Saddle where I made left up towards the saddle between Mt Disappointment and Sang Gabriel Peak. Headed to SG peak first and could tell I was slowing down significantly from tired legs. I took a longer break on SG and helped a party at the peak take a group pic. Headed back down, past the helipad and up to Mt Disappointment where I marveled at the wide berth the view allowed. Saw Mt Lukens, Strawberry Peak, Josephine Peak... all gorgeous. There were construction workers working on a new structure at Mount Disappointment. While there I also took some time to appreciate the prominence aptly dubbed "Desolation Pinnacle" by Keith Winston. The idea of bagging it crossed my mind for a mere second but knowing that I was tired and that it's probably a bit out of my comfort zone I decided against it. Returned via Mt Lowe road and Sam Merrill trail back to the car. The tracker showed 19.2 miles, so I just jogged in the neighborhood real quick to round it up to 20 miles. Overall pretty proud of this hike due to mileage (20 mi) and ascent (5500 ft). Had a bit of everything: multiple peaks, some slight scramble, slight bushwhack, and trail running.
