Ascent Trip ReportMy main objective for the day. Once we made it down to Forgotten Pass we started up the south ridge of the mountain. There are large rock towers and outcroppings all up this side that make a ridge line traverse impossible.
At this point, we came across an arrow made out of rocks pointing left. There was a series of cairns towards the left (west side) and we had Jason Parks’s recent track. This route started well and lured us into it, unfortunately, this was a terrible route. The terrain quickly steepened and loosened once we got under the rock towers. This was the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been on a mountain. Every time we battled up to the ridge, there would be another colossal rock formation that would require dipping back down in the loose scree to get around. We finally were able to gain the ridge and cross over to the east side which was easy walking at this point up to the summit. Took us almost 3 hours from Forgotten Pass battling loose class 3 rock and slopes. The descent was down a cool backbone to the saddle with Inyo.
I was running on fumes and even lower on water, so I took a 2 hour rest while the Sean’s went after Inyo. Upon their return, we dropped down through Bed Springs Camp and out at Union Wash. We descended 5000 feet and 4 miles in 90 minutes thanks to some awesome scree skiing.
Trip stats include the traverse from Swansea Rd. Where we camped and the other peaks along the way. My track stopped recording between Keynot and Inyo and did not get the descent. 14 hour day.
Great trip. Tough trip. Be prepared and bring extra water. 112 ounces wasn’t enough.
