Ascent Trip Report14ers.com
We started from Medano Lake TH from Medano Pass (4wd). Medano Lake Trail is ~3.4 miles & +1932 gain to reach Medano Lake so its an easy going trail until you leave it. A gpx is very helpful if doing all 4 peaks for a good place to ascend Peak 12925 & descend Peak 12883 while avoiding cliffs. We used jmbrooks8 track (LoJ). Ben noticed a big fury butt rummaging around shortly before leaving the trail to cross Medano Creek. Perhaps it was the same baby bear jmbrooks8 encountered in 2017, only all grown up. Once leaving the trail it’s a grunt but it gets better the higher you go. It’s not a bad bushwhack, just steep. The only snow we encountered was right before the summit of Herard and we had no issues kicking steps into it with trail runners. Everything was C2 max.... MAYBE C2+ descending Herard to the saddle with Medano. We descended the east ridge of 12883 until nearing treeline then left the ridge to go straight down to meet back with Medano Lake Trail while following a trickling drainage but staying more to the left/east of it on loose pine needle covered dirt. |
