Ascent Trip Report

This started out just as a hike to Round Valley, trying to get more miles and elevation gain for a Strava challenge. I went down from Humber Park and took the climber's trail to Suicide Rock, then went down to the Deer Springs Trail, took that to the PCT then south on that past Strawberry Cienaga to the Wellman Divide Trail, up past Wellman's Cienaga and then down to Round Valley.

As I continued around on the loop I happened to check the Peakbagger app to get a better map and saw that I was going right by 2 peaks. I realized that I would have time to do them if I hurried so headed cross country for Divide Peak. After a fun scramble to the summit I started over to Luella Todd but just headed for the nearest peak in that direction without checking the map.

It was a really fun scramble up a steep sloping rock face that was much like climbing a gym climbing wall. There were great holds everywhere and I was soon at the top. Unfortunately as I looked ahead I could see a higher peak beyond the one I was on and checking the map confirmed that I wasn't on Luella Todd but just a lower point between that and Divide Peak. Thankfully I could continue down the other side and had another easy scramble up the proper summit.

I was getting a bit concerned about the time so quickly got back down to the trail and continued the loop around to Saddle Junction and then down the Devil's Slide Trail to Humber Park, arriving there just before needing to turn my headlight on. It was only a 9 1/2 hour hike but I didn't start until 10:50 in the morning. I just can't seem to get moving early in the morning but that's not a big problem because late afternoon until dusk is one of my favorite times of the day to hike. Anyway it was a beautiful hike on a beautiful day and I got to summit two peaks that I hadn't planned on.
