Ascent Trip Report

After almost a year since we first hiked it, Katrina and I were back to hike Mansfield from a different approach: the Long Trail southbound. Janos was with us as well and it was his first time. We parked at the Visitor's Center and signed in at the kiosk. Theboardwalk trail has a white blaze, but we couldn't figure out if it connected to the Long Trail. We ended up walking the road, which has no shoulder, for 0.4mi and found the trail on the left. We were passed by and then passed back a family with a loud talking man. We were hoping to see moose or bear, but only saw a toad. We can blame that man for scaring them off. Finally out of earshot and into higher forest zones we came upon the shelter. From there we began to get glimpses of the hulking summit rock outcropping from various tiny meadows. We skipped the Adam's Apple spur since I had already hiked it and they didn't care to add a COHP. Above the saddle the wind began to effect us and tried to steal our hats. The route got scrambly and one corner in particular had a somewhat exposed but easy scramble in the worst of the bitter wind. We were soon at the top and able to get out of the wind just a few feet east of the benchmark. Janos did some tech support while Katrina and I had snacks. The view is incredible and I decided that after two ascents here and three on Camel's Hump, I can safely say that Mansfield is my pick of the two.

We continued southbound, then turned onto the Profanity Trail to lasso back to the shelter junction. Some guy yelled at us that the Profanity Trail "sucks". That SOB was f'n wrong, we thought it was a kick ass trail. After the trail got steep, we had to negotiate a 100' section of snow, but then it was big steps for most of the rest of the way. Once back at the shelter we got on Long Trail again and took that back to VT 108 and our car. Another beautiful day on Vermont's summit!
