Ascent Trip ReportFossil Ridge + Henry Mtn + Square Top Mtn + Bronco Mtn: An extremely fun loop in the Fossil Ridge Wilderness with unique geology.
We started from our campsites at the fee free Gold Creek Campground. This is an excellent campground next to the relaxing Gold Creek with roomy sites, clean bathroom, not often used/low traffic, and only 2wd to reach off CR 771.
The trail starts from the CG and we followed it while traversing under some cliffs until we found a gentle grassy slope to ascend up to Fossil Ridge. From Fossil Ridge to Square Top there’s tons of worm fossils to be found in the old shallow ocean floor with creatures scattered throughout the rocks - the primordial goo of our existence. A super cool subsidence is along this ridge too!
The ridge between Square Top and Bronco is delightfully long with ample scrambling opportunities. Everything can be kept at C2. Make sure to note cliffy areas on Bronco’s ridge before starting ... we descended steep dirt because following ridge proper back down the the campground likely would have cliffed out.
