Ascent Trip ReportMisery Hill loves company: Missouri Hill, Taylor Mtn A & Mt Aetna - C2 -
From Hwy 50 I took CR 224 & CR 228 (follow signs for Taylor Mtn & Cree CR). This was 2wd to start and the last ~1 mile to where I parked is annoying 4wd. The road doesn’t get noticeably rougher beyond where I chose to start, I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or what I’d have time for given the regularly programmed noon storms lately. If I had only went for Taylor I wanted to make sure I got enough gainz. Yesssss I could have started earlier but that’s next to impossible when left to my own accord. So Lost Mtn &/or Peak 11178 were out of question today.
I followed CR 228 from where I parked and left it to go up a mix of tundra & talus for Missouri Hill. I was feeling sluggish today and this felt like it took forever. From here it was a ridge run to Taylor and then to Aetna. Snow was 95% avoidable. All but a few supportive spots on the ridge to Aetna remained. I chose to do Aetna as an out-&-back because I’ve heard horror stories about doing Aetna any other way than snow climbing the classic Grand Couloir. The Grand is on my bucket list but it’s definitely out early this year so I’ll have to come back for it next year! As I made my way back towards Taylor from Aetna I skirted below Taylor’s summit as storms were a brewin’. Aren’t storms just the best pacers?! I hauled ass down Taylor and got down to my truck in the nick of time. My chosen route down Taylor’s south ridge and angling back towards where I parked is steeper than most might like. I went for quick and dirty but there’s certainly gentler options. I also chose to go over a large snowfield instead of around it. I plunge stepped and finished off with a graceful butt scoot as the snow thinned. Big tree don’t fall hard if it’s already on the ground. |
