Ascent Trip Report

I've heard much about Thorn Point and it did not disappoint. We parked at Cedar Creek Trailhead as there was a pretty good wash out to pass and make it all the way to Thorn Meadows. It added just over a half mile each way and it was refreshing to walk barefoot in the creek crossing on the way back. A vehicle with very good clearance can make it. I'm in a Nissan Rogue. Even the two creek crossings we did to get to Cedar Creek were close to the limit for my Rogue.

The trail starts just past the old guard station at Thorn Meadows. Unfortunately it has been shot up pretty bad and probably will not last many more years. The cinder blocks and doors at the restroom at the trailhead is even more damaged by gun shot. I'll never understand this behavior.

The trail starts out at a gentle grade up a shady canyon with large tall Jeffery pines and oaks for about a mile. The trail then climbs a ridge with some switchbacks up to the ridge and then on to lookout tower on the summit. The trail was little brushy in places but very easy to follow. A few downed tress but nothing major and easy enough to get over. Fantastic views of the southern Los Padres and Sespe Canyon, especially from the tower.

There is a nice rock outcrop that overlooks the deeply cut canyon about halfway and a rock outcrop composed almost entirely of fossil shell (coquina). Some good intermittent shade from the pines and oaks is enjoyed for most of the route. Lots in bloom for our hike. The lookout is still standing and accessible with many historical items still inside. We were fortunate enough to read the log entry from the son of a former occupant. See linked pics for description. I've seen many lookouts in California and this is one of my favorites. Unfortunately I don't think it will be around much longer. Visit it while you can! Some pics.
