Ascent Trip Report

Climbed from the SW basin after a long bushwhack from Mildred Lakes Trail. I tried this approach unsuccessfully last year and was thinking I would approach from the North this time, but the Hamma Hamma crossings looked dicey and I opted to take another stab at this route. My mistake last time was attempting the climb to the saddle between the Middle and South peaks too soon, ending up in steep, cliffy terrain. This time I bit the bullet and bushwhacked farther to the SE, making a long, ascending traverse until I could switch back and climb NE to the basin on more moderate terrain. The basin was snowy and I could easily climb straight up the SW face using crampons, almost all the way to the West ridge. A little brushy scrambling brought me to the ridge crest and the rest of the climb was mostly rock scrambling with just a couple spots of snow negotiation. The snow on the SW face was pretty thin and will be steep scree and loose rock soon. The bushwhack up and down wasn’t fun, but this was a good time to do it because the devil’s club and other small brush hasn’t filled out yet. Relocating the Mildred Lakes Trail back down in the drainage was probably the least fun part of the trip.
