Ascent Trip Report

5/23/20 Pleasant Mountain, SW Gully with Abbey Collins: Hiked in to surprisingly beautiful weather (which would change) and stellar booting conditions in Ram Valley. Almost no snow left in the valley proper, could be done in trail runners! Despite our brunch start (we were hiking into Ram Valley a little before 2pm, don’t judge!), the snow was surprisingly firm in the gully proper. Still, we stubbornly hugged the choss piles on the climber’s left, removing the occasional portable hand-hold. The snow butting up against the rocks was pretty sloppy, mainly from small moats. We used axes but no crampons going up, due to the softness. Eventually we exited the gully and traversed some scree to the summit block. By this time it was gently snowing and we got to see some Memorial Day Weekend termination dust accumulating on the surrounding peaks.

On the way down, we crampon’d up and were able to plunge-step the entire gully by sticking to the middle and avoiding that moat’d out nonsense! By this time clouds were sinking into the valley. Still a great day in the hills, always feels good to sneak one in despite a sub-par forecast!

Oh, Raina to Peeking looks cruiser right now!
