Ascent Trip ReportAlthough my primary purpose for this trip was to achieve the Greenlee Co HP, as is becoming typical for my trips the lesser peaks that I stop at are usually much more enjoyable. This was the case again here with Rose Peak. I arrived around 1:12pm, parked at the trailhead and began hiking up via the lookout access road. Distance was marked 1 mile on the sign in the parking area. Since I'd left my GPS at home this is the distance I opted to use here on my ascent page..keep it simple.
The trek up was nice, initially under pines before breaking out of the tree cover as the two track curved up and around the south side of the mountain, then curving more to a short series of switchbacks on the north/northeast side. I reached the summit area after about 40 minutes, with a few stops here and there to photograph vistas and flowers and lizards and such. Once on top the signage said the location was closed due to COVID-19. As I raised my camera to take an overview shot of the tower and house, the lookout keeper stepped out of the tower and waved at me to walk up.
We spoke for a few minutes (him remaining up on the tower deck--social distance) and he said no worries for me to walk around and check out the area. He also let me know the benchmark for the peak was on the adjacent ridge that extends out to the north. Directions, walk around the solar panel below the cabin and look for a small cut trail. Follow this out beyond the helipad until reaching the rocky area and the ROSE BM will be mounted in the rocks there. Found it!
After returning from the BM and exploring around a bit longer I waved goodbye to the keeper who was still in the tower and started down. Took about 25 minutes, again with photo stops here and there. Reached the vehicle around 2:23pm and was northbound to the CoHP.
This was an enjoyable peak, easy to get to short 1 mile walk, and with great views. Although I did go on to get Greenlee Co HP later in the day this peak was definitely the highlight of today's outing. I recommend this peak if you're coming out this way for the CoHP and would like another (much more scenic) option to add to your itinerary.
