Ascent Trip ReportRight after I returned home from Bahrain, Becca suggested the wonderful idea of heading out to the Olympic Coast for some logging bumps and beach relaxation. Perfect idea in my opinion - thanks babe! I was so excited to get back out in the PNW mountains with Becca, which made for a wonderful day out!
If you start just a little further down the ridge to the SW like we did, you can walk right from the road to ridge without any difficulty. To the first peak is wide open forest and some clearings, very nice walking. To the second peak is a steep descent then plenty of brush, but never terrible and none of it prickly or nasty. We came prepared with rain pants and jackets and had a comfortable short hike. Just below the NE summit, we were re-tracing our steps when we came across a fresh pile of mountain lion poop so fresh that it was in our ascent footprint and still steaming as it cooled off in the air. It was probably just 200 meters of walking below the summit when we encountered it. So, the mountain lion was clearly checking us out to see if we were a snack-size or not. Thankfully, we did not appear easy enough prey and made plenty of noise and talked quite loudly on our hike back out. The steep section below the south summit was much easier on the re-ascent than the initial descent. From the south summit, easy pleasant walking back to the car. The summits look about the same height and we do not have a hand level to confirm, so just hit both. The NE summit has a very nice open spot facing west and north with good views of the surrounding mountains. We found the Andy Martin register in the NE peak and signed in. Road was navigable in a Subaru Outback to our start location.
