Ascent of Flat Top on 2020-04-23Date: | Thursday, April 23, 2020 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Flat Top | Location: | USA-Georgia | Elevation: | 4114 ft / 1253 m |
Ascent Trip ReportRan from Darnell Creek. 10.6 miles RT. 1:02 up, 3 minutes on the summit, 53 minutes down.
ACCESS: The drive from Dillard is easy. Turn east on Kelly's Creek road and make a slight right onto Darnell Creek road at the sign for the shooting range. Darnell Creek road quickly turns to gravel and climbs toward the trailhead. The road becomes rough gravel for the last mile and is not passable in a passenger car. I stopped 50 yards short of the trailhead.
ROUTE: Stay straight on the Darnell Creek Trail for 3.1 miles. At 0.6 miles there is a deep stream crossing. It is easy but over knee-deep. At 3.1, make a left on the gravel for 10 yards and another left onto the Bartram. I ascended as high as I could on the Bartram then bushwhacked to the summit from the east. No views. I descended south face and had to scramble a few rock faces and dealt with heavy brush. The eastern route is by far the best way to gain access. This was a fun run. The Bartram is well-maintained but the Darnell Creek Trail could use a bit of work on drainage and downed trees. |
