After attempting the Cervidae to Macks loop back in February but being shut down by deep snow, Kate and I took Morty and decided to go back and finish this loop hike that I made up. This is not the normal route to the summit of Cervidae. We parked close to Macks Creek at a little lot called "Naked Rock" and headed up one of the ridges. After about 1 mile and 1600ft of elevation gain we joined the main trail and made our way to the Summit of Cervidae. After that, we descended down the North side of Cervidae and followed a ridge most of the way around towards Macks Peak. We left the ridge to shorten the route and hiked down into a valley and back up to catch the ridge to Macks. A short walk up from there and we were on the summit. Now it was just a steep descent down to where we were parked.
We really enjoyed this loop. It's steeper than the standard route on Cervidae (which is already steep), you reach the summit in about 1.6 miles instead of 2. The ridge walk over to Macks is really nice, and looking back it probably would have been less effort to go the extra distance and stay on the ridge (which is usually the case). The downclimb from Macks back to the parking area is not fun. It's quite steep our toes were feeling it when we got back to the car. All in all though, it's a great hike.
