Ascent Trip Report

A nice & steep C2 Colorado National Monument peak. Started from Monument Canyon TH free parking lot and picked my path according to the topo. I mostly followed the rim because I prefer standing closer to the edge.
My track is a lot more wandering than straight up summit & back. But good for a general guide... I used Kevin Baker’s track for my own guidance as he recommended this A+ peak for me.
I flipped out and took about 500 photos. Not a cloud in the sky, so my photos sucked but hey the views of being surrounded by massive sandstone cliffs are engrained in my brain.
I really took my time enjoying all the beauty & solitude it had to offer. I met a bighorn sheep while ascending, they are popular in the CNM. And I even found a little cave to crawl in which ended up being a tunnel with a light at the end of it.
Proceeding past the summit, just below it, holds the true treasure. Absolutely epic views of Independence Monument, staring at it straight in its face. The views of Wedding Canyon to the left & Monument Canyon to the right aren’t to shabby either.
I was having a hard time getting myself to leave. I wish I would have lugged a tent, water and food to just live up there for a bit.
But alas my time to leave had come, and while I descended I stared at all the rich folks homes who probably have never been up their own backyard beauty.
The Island is also great for gaining visual beta on current snow conditions for summits in the Bookcliffs & Grand Mesa areas
