Ascent Trip Report

This is a combined report for the four peaks I visited today beginning with Pinal Peak. Pinal was a straightforward drive up from Globe via Forest Road 651. Some light compressed snow on the road was still present in the upper reach shady areas from Friday’s precipitation event. Aside from that bit of cautious going, it took about 40 minutes to reach the summit in the 4x4. No GPS track or time up/down since this was a drive up. Grabbed a few requisite summit pics and headed off to the neighboring Signal Peak to the west. Arizona Fire Lookout #11 in the bag.

Next stop was Signal Peak, which did require a short 0.55 mile walk to the summit, 1.1 mile roundtrip. The forest road, marked 651B on the map, was gated at FR 651. So I parked near the gate and proceeded up from there. Ran into a couple gentlemen on a Polaris who were owners of one of the tower sites. A quick chat about the towers and the weather and such on the mountain this year and parted ways. Left the vehicle at 11:30am, arrived at the summit at 11:42am. Took a few pics of the vistas from this vantage and the old fire tower and headed back down to the vehicle, arriving back at 11:55am. Arizona Fire Lookout #12.

Next up was Madera Peak, which required backtracking down FR 651 to FR 580. Turning west onto FR 580 and following it to a dead end at a couple of gated two tracks. From here I parked the vehicle and took the northernmost gated two track, which according to the map is still FR 580. The walk up was about 0.6 mile to the summit. I departed the vehicle at 12:34pm and made the summit by 12:50pm. The summit is mostly tree covered so although views are present this one doesn’t have the vistas like Signal or Pinal Peaks. Most interesting on the summit were the old concrete bases of the fire lookout that used to be present here. There is also an old remnant square cistern on the side of the unmaintained two track, just to the east of the old tower site. Signed the summit log, which is located in an oak tree in the middle of the 4 concrete tower bases. Back to the vehicle, arriving at 1:00pm. Arizona Fire Lookout #13.

Final stop was a quick jaunt up the unnamed Peak 6680. I parked along FS 580 at the base of an unmaintained two track that spurs off to a camp site about 50 meters up the hill. I trekked up this road and then went cross country from the campsite to the summit. Left vehicle at 1:10pm, summit at 1:16pm. Quick and easy 0.15 mile one way to the summit, 0.3 mile roundtrip, back to vehicle at 1:20pm, and back to Tucson until next weekend’s adventures.
