Ascent Trip ReportBagged the second half of the beautiful Big Dominguez Canyon Trail yesterday as an out-&-back in some magical conditions. Calm snow and surreal clouds. I must say this half is by far the better half IMHO. There is a signed shortcut to get to Cactus Park from Big Dominguez Canyon Trail, which was ~7 miles from where I parked at the Bridgeport TH parking lot. Coordinates for the Cactus Park shortcut = 38.80207, -108.43610
Okay for Peak 5916 I started at the Bridgeport TH, off Hwy 50. After reaching the Big Dominguez Canyon TH, I crossed the flowy tributary and hopped onto a social trail (~1.5 miles from the Bridgeport TH parking). I am not sure if this trail is an old 4wd road, animal path, or access for fishers... but it was legit! I then followed this social trail along the river for ~1 mile. For most of this section it appears as if there is no easy access up its impenetrable walls, but I followed the Kirk’s track from LOJ so I knew that a C2 way was just out of sight. I improved upon a couple existing cairns that I came across - almost picking up cow patties instead of rocks in the process! Really though, how the heck to cows get up this stuff! Oh the places that cows will go. The going was slow for me since it was very slick and still freshly coated in snow from yesterday’s storm. Also those ground cacti really thrive here! Wear thick socks & sturdy shoes. (Add ~1.5 miles to the RT total because I ended my track early at Big Dominguez Canyon TH to start a new track for Star Mesa) |
