Ascent Trip ReportI drove up to the trailhead the night before (one or two mudholes and occasional rockiness, but overall fine for most passenger cars) and car camped. Overall, Tom's route works fairly well; I followed faint trail segments along the ridge through mild brush after cutting from the official trail at 1.0 miles. The final ridge was indeed brushy in places with an often indistinct trail, and while I didn't have any fully unobstructed views, I could nevertheless see Roan Mountain, Grandfather Mountain, and the Amphibolites rising above a beautiful morning undercast of clouds. I took the official trail on the way back, which was a reasonable alternative and a little more relaxing once back on the good woods road. Really, really nice to finally see sun again. Around 2 hours roundtrip.
