Ascent Trip Report

In Vegas for work and took advantage of a rare day off to bag my first AZ peak.

Took the route reached via Black Joe Mine Road and used Dennis Poulin's trip report as my main guide with pieces from some other reports as well. Rented a Jeep Wrangler which came in handy as the road was definitely 4x4 only. I would not drive a sedan up that road.

As I do most of my hiking in the east, I wasn't used to the complete exposure all the way up as well as there being absolutely no trail to follow. I applied liberal sunscreen which definitely helped. I followed the advice of most of the reports to keep on the ridge line. There were sections where there would be a trail, but then it would disappear. It was a bright sunny day that started cool at the trail head, but warmed up as the day went on. The summit had a chilly breeze, but not too cold. Stunning views all around made the hike well worth it. There are two benchmarks on the summit for those who look for them. I signed the visitor log in the tube. I was the first visitor since the end of January. Followed the same route most of the way down, except towards the end I ended up down in the last wash which wasn't fun. If you use my GPS stay to the right at the end!

Just over 4.5 miles round trip. About 4 hours with stopping (I tend to be a fast hiker).
