Ascent Trip Report

Still surprised no peakbagger has done this but me. Sure the LOJ people won't do it unless it has 300 feet of prominence but this is a nice public space and nearly makes the 300 foot prominence. What I like about this hike is the solitude - you will never see anyone in here. And they have harvested so many ponderosa pines (I presume that had the beetle) that there are vast views along the steep hillsides and deer. My dog and I had a delightful romp over many hills on the way back and explored new areas of the park and not a soul on a sunny Saturday. The peak does has a cliff face that affords some scrambling class if you attack it head on which I have done in the past but today, me and the dog Willy wanted to hit the HP then explore the backwoods. Solitude on public land. With all the meandering along the hillsides in this big loop we gained nearly 1000 feet. We blew off the few un-maintained DMP trails and dirt roads and just headed up the hillsides no snow except on the northern and eastern sides where despite the fact 90% of the snow was gone where we crossed it in patches it was often 12 inches deep.
