Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the parking area just before the the very well-marked PRIVATE PROPERTY NO TRESPASSING area on Beech Mtn Rd. (note to all : as of March 2020, there is no ATT cell coverage around the parking area so if using cell service for maps, preload them) There's a short section of trail (the Flynn trail) to circumvent this area. I followed Flynn trail to the old Beech Mtn Rd. About halfway up I started seeing snow pathces then copmlete snow cover. It is a steady but extremely gradual incline for about 1.7 miles up to the first intersection, which is a 4-way intersection. At this point the snow was about 6, and in some places 8 inches deep. I took the right (red snomobile trail) a short distance until it started to turn away from where I wanted to go, then bushwhacked up the hill using compass and gps. (Not hard to do, just keep climbing up) At the point where I left the red snowmobile trail, the snow was 8 inches and crusty enough for me to stay on top. The sun was out and it was warming up, I was trying to get up and back before the snow warmed too much and I would sink all the way through. If I walked too fast/hard I would sink...it was a delicate balance of going as fast as I could without sinking. The steep uphill had no snow due to facing directly into the sun so that made the climb much easier. I had on sturdy trail runners and used poles, but never put on any traction and didn't bother to bring snowshoes. I self evaluated the conditions constantly and would have turned around if needed. There was cell service up on the trail, just not down by the parking area. I found the peak, just keep going up until there is no more up. I walked around on top to what looked like the peak to me and GPS marked it. Followed my tracks down and did some trail running along the way.
