Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Bald Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway and followed the jeep road (a.k.a. Bald Mountain Jeep Trail, a.k.a. FR 162) roughly northeast for about a mile to an intersection, then turned right and followed a slightly rougher forest road southwest to the summit. The entire route is obvious and there are trail signs with maps at trail intersections along the way (this road provides access to St. Marys Wilderness Area trailheads). According to a sign the road is closed to vehicles from January to April, but the gate at the parkway was open when I was there (though I saw no vehicles while walking). The lookout tower at the summit is long gone, though some concrete bases are still visible. The exact summit is not distinct, but it's easy enough to wander around and visit the likely options. Some views through trees from summit area, but these would be decreased in summer; this Bald Mountain is not bald.
