Ascent Trip ReportRose and I came here with Hans Haustein TR and is all one needs. This TR attempts to update/add information. One must read Hans. I visited all the 3 areas. I have nothing to add to the 2 eastern areas, nothing has changed.
Western Area ..... 2 miles, 312' gain, 70 minutes RT. We first attempted to go to Hans' TH at the white house. Hans writes " ....... continue on Highway 123 until you see the Hurricane Creek Wilderness Sign (about 1/4 mile further down Highway 123) and park along the highway, or you can turn north on the dirt road and follow it up a steep hill to a white house......". We drove this extremely rough road (very risky for my Van) 200yds to a small house - the very friendly elderly couple was aware of the mountain being a high point, said, "This road will take you to the house but there is no one home now and I can't give you permission to go up there.". Apparently the house is for sale. I didn't ask them if the road condition is the same all the way up. Also he confirmed, "Poison ivy is al over the place."
I decided to bushwhack the climb from the south side. We went to the crest of the Hwy#123 south of the summit, driveway #1802 is to the south. This was my TH (35.70612,-93.15400), the summit is left-of-north at less than a mile. The open-looking woods to the north have no fence or posted signs. The gradual bushwhack was easy, very open woods with hardly no underbrush, only a few obstacles to deal with - small rock ledges and small dense patches of thorny/nasty brush requiring circumventing. I did my best not-to touch/step-on anything that looked like poison ivy branches. I'm very allergic to poison ivy so I'll see in the next few days how I did.????? This is a good route, Rose's wait was very quiet.
Prior to coming here I took in Coleman knob to the east and added it to the PB Library. I felt that it needed to be in the Library since its "West" higher neighbor was listed. My TH was a gated farm entrance (unposted) on the south side of #123 (35.71492,-93.13885), 1.1 miles east of the above noted TH. It's a short xcountry/whack southwest bound 300 yds to the summit - a round pasture land. No animals on this visit.
"IT'S NOT THE HOURS YOU PUT IN, BUT WHAT YOU PUT INTO THE HOURS THAT COUNT." ....... an aphorism from a fortune cookie.
