Ascent Trip Report

Prominent but somewhat unspectacular summit rising above nearby Lake Toxaway. I hiked this one with my wife on a birthday get-away weekend in the Sapphire Valley area of Western NC. Being the good sport that she always is, she said yes to a PB of this mountain after I spotted it near sunset the night before, after we ate dinner at the Greystone Inn. This is essentially a drive-up, although I guess you could attempt a bushwhack from either Panthertown Valley or the Lake Toxaway community.

Set your GPS to the intersection of US 64 and Tower Road. The hardest part of this "trek" is the curvy road up to the pullout area near the telecom towers at the summit.

I swear, it seems like every good HP in unprotected land in this State is beset by towers and more towers and more towers. A short distance from the HP the road turns to gravel, but is easily transversed by most vehicles. At the the pullout, park and climb to the HP near the the tower cage of wired fencincing. There is an old Forest Service Tower near the summit that is locked and gated. A younger me (and single) would have vaulted over the fencining to climb the roughly 50 foot tower to get views above the tree line. However, with no permission from from the NC Parks Service and an anxious spouse, I stepped to highest ground and then headed down about 50 yards to the best ground level view to the SW. You can spot Jones Gap SP and Lake Jocasee from here.

Quietly angered by private homeowners who had houses nearby that likely afforded tremendous views in many directions, we headed down Tower Road at a slow pace to continue our day.
