Ascent Trip ReportHiked this on Feb 23, 2020. Long drive from my house in the North Georgia mountains, so I came up the day before and stayed overnight in Burnsville, NC. I think I'll stage here when I do the Black Mountain Crest Trail to Mount Mitchell. Anyway is a great day for hiking. I started from Carver Gap and hiked East toward Grassy Ridge Bald first. The trail was icy or snowy in many/most areas, perfect for microspikes. Tremendous views along most of the trail. Then I backtracked to the Gap and headed west for Road High Knob and Roan High Bluff. Met an "older" fellow on the trail who took pleasure in telling me about the history of the Roan Highlands and the old hotel that once stood near the top. Fascinating. I used the Cloudland access road to hike back down the mountain. If asphalt hurts your feet, there is not much road shoulder on the access road to hike on.
