Ascent Trip ReportPart of a family vacation and grand tour of Texas, state high points and the Rockies.
We drove the many miles of unpaved roads pretty carefully in our heavily-laden lowish-clearance MPV but were unable to progress up the high point access road because of the rutted state. So having parked at the entrance and having paid the access fee x6 into the honesty box we made the gentle stroll of a mile or so along the wildflower-edged road to the high point obelisk (guarded by pipe-fencing) despite the warning not to do so because of bison hazard (but we had, after all, travelled 5,500 miles to get here). We signed the register and gained a great sense of space looking out over the high plains in all directions with all bison safely in the far distance and behind electric fencing. The area is all very flat and I wouldn’t be surprised if resurveying showed some other point to be marginally higher but I’m claiming this as a definitive ascent now and for the future! |
