Ascent Trip Report

This turned out to be the highlight of the 3 6k peak climb of Mt. Leconte. Continued on from the cairn at High Top. Less footprints in the snow showed this was a peak that was not nearly climbed as much as Cliff Top. This made me happy. Although I only had run into about 10 people at this point, it was still more than I expected on a Monday in February. .1 miles past High Top is the spur trail to Myrtle Point on the right. .2 miles more to Myrtle Point. I'm surprised more people weren't hitting this peak. Lazy bastards. So 6.6 miles total to Myrtle Point from the Alum Cave Trailhead after hitting Cliff Top and High Top at 11:35am. So just under 5 hours. Hung out here for 25 minutes by myself with amazing 270 degree views. Spent time figuring out which mountains were Clingman's and Kephart. Looked over onto the Old Black/Guyot/Chapman/Sequoyah area, reflecting on the many hours I've spent exploring that remote are of Smoky Mountain National Park. This was the experience I'd been waiting to have during my climbing of the 6k peaks in the South. Couldn't stay any longer as I had to get back to car and back to MI so I could get to work the next morning. Still this was totally worth the trip. So glad I made this spur of the moment trip. Can't believe more people weren't hiking the extra few tenths of a mile to get here. 47th of the 56 listed 6k peaks in the East...Everything went downhill from here. Literally and figuratively. I did figure out where I needed to start the bushwhack to get to West Point. Unfortunately I wouldn't have time to do it today. Passed at least 100 people on the way down back to Alum Cave Trailhead ugh. Don't even consider doing this hike on a weekend. Slippery mushy snow down to about 5100'. Cable use was mandatory in spots. Back at the car at 3:00. Garmin says 5.1 total down which doesn't seem correct.
