Ascent Trip ReportA tower access road climb from the south side... 1.6 miles, 520' gain, 60 minutes RT.
We came here with the plan to access the summit from the south side tower access road all as per Dennis Stewart TR (which is all one needs). All went AOK, this TR attempts to record our experience. The hiking distances I provide are estimates only.
From I-73/74, exit 72, we drove west on NC64 for 7.1 miles to a right turn on Mount Shepherd Road (large sign "Mount Shepherd Retreat Center"), 1 mile east turned right on Mount Shepherd Road Extension and went north .5 miles to the gated Tower access road on the right (Dennis' TH).
We first continued north and went the the Retreat Office for information. The nice gentleman said "Yes you can use the access road to the summit, with yesterday's rains its probably an easier and safer route. You will need to sign an entry permit." which I did - there was no cost so I left a donation.
We went back to the gated entrance - Rose waited here (it would be a quiet wait).
I hiked the gradually-ascending/winding road .8 miles northerly to the summit (with 2 large/fenced-in Communication Towers) in 25 minutes, did the necessary HP check, walked west 200 yds on a lesser road to the Fire Tower, and descended to the TH in 15 minutes.
