Ascent Trip Report

Calfire's Chief Warren arranged for two of his crew from the Brooks Station to escort me in my Toyota from Brooks to Berryessa Peak. I met Adam and Bo at the Brooks Calfire station, next to the Cache Creek Casino, on CA 16. I followed them in their F150 utility truck 1.1 mile south on CA 16 to county road 78A, going 1.5 miles to its end at a locked gate. From here the well graded and maintained dirt road ascends through two more locked gates and past a simple but well established hunting camp to the top of Berryessa Peak. Distance through private property from 1st locked gate to 2nd gate: 2,3 miles; to 3rd gate: 5,2 miles; to summit: 7.0 miles. The view is extensive, highlighted by Lake Berryessa below to the west. The L.O. burned down in 2004. A USGS reference marker is found on a small summit rock with the inscription "Monticello 1880". Several telecommunication antennae are passed just below the top. A new public trail from the west is under construction and should open in 2013. Berryessa Peak is the Yolo County Prominence HP.
