Ascent Trip Report

Dirt road from Ocampo to the small hillside Mirador Ranch. Permission required but the problem appears not the permission but having someone to open the numerous locked gates on the dirt track. I suspect if you were willing to walk or mountain bike the 14.5 miles to Mirador Ranch you'd be allowed to. We arrange to drive and get escorted so that the many locked gates can be opened. Rough going in places and our 2WD Dodge SUV struggles at times. A proper 4x4 would be advantageous. The drive takes us about 1hr15mins. There's a good track all the way from Mirador to Canada Agua but keeping to it is a bit 'hit and miss' as it crosses dry river valleys and there are many many track and path options in the area. Pleasant countryside with views of the mountains ahead, spiky plants of all descriptions and a Scorpion to add interest. We camp on pebbles in the Canada Agua, the only water we have is the water we've brought with us (5 litres each). Following day set off at first light and follow the Canada Agua all the way, good path to source of fresh water then rough going through open forest but lots of fallen trees to negotiate. Plenty of Bear dung around and Denise spots a Black Bear lumbering up the hillside above us but it shows no interest. First rock wall is bypassed easily on the right hand side, the second shorter rock wall bypassed up scree gully and traverse on left hand side - more difficult but OK. Valley merges into hillside on the summit slopes and easy going through open forest to the high point. We don't rush and take 12 hours from tent to summit back to tent with an hour on the summit, 6hrs up and 5hrs down.
