Ascent Trip ReportWe parked at the wilderness boundary about 3 miles before the GPS track starts, I just didn't see much point to tracking the path on an old road. Went up a little too early where the wash ends at the shallow saddle... my return path, though only slightly lower, was a lot easier to navigate. Enjoyed the ridge part up to the top.
We drove in at night, and after the final sharp right turn the road immediately dives down and navigates through the large wash that drains much of the Turtle Mountains. My old DPS guide says to be careful here. At night I could not find the proper exit to the wash and we somehow made it up the steep bank dragging the back of the underside of my Tacoma on the way. I'm still surprised we made it without incident, was not looking forward to going back down it, and wasn't sure how so many others presumably made it in recent years. Turns out the road was rerouted for the exit and we couldn't tell in the dark. It's much more obvious on the drive out, however. Once in the wash you need to turn left (on the drive to the trailhead) and drive directly up the wash a ways to find a new spot to exit. Not that far really but much further than I had walked around in the cold night before.
