Ascent Trip Report

After a car issue on an attempt the weekend prior, I made it out to the Shaftsburg area. I followed Ben Lostracco's address of 7606 Lovejoy Road, and simply rang the doorbell for permission. An older lady came up to the door, gave her name as Judy, and was extremely helpful. After asking where I was from, and why I was there, she said simply "well I think you've found the right place. If you look, there's a path by the garden that goes right by the point. Go tell my husband in the work shed over there that you're here in case he comes out, and you should be good". Her husband seemed a little more hesitant, but still granted permission quite quickly. I walked around the hill to the left of the door, thinking to have found my spot at the top. I start walking back to the car, when Judy opens the door and says "You didn't walk very far! Did you find the path?" I respond that I did, but it appeared to slope down. Nonetheless, I returned back to the hill, and followed the path. Indeed, there was another hill to the Northwest, but it appeared lower. I walked back to the main hill, looking again for other paths. I see the garden she was referencing, and a separate path. This path significantly decreases in elevation, past a small shooting range, and back up onto the same hill. Now that I saw this section of the hill, the USGS' horseshoe contour makes much more sense. This section was much more overgrown, with the highpoint I believe either being at the base of a tree in the first section I stomped around, or in a little circle of three trees on the second area. I went back to thank Judy, but after ringing the bell twice with no answer, I continued on my way. I cannot recommend Johnny V's Smokehouse in Perry enough for all travelling this way.
