we leave Madison, Wi in a thunderstorm, forced to stop in Reedstown, WI at the Hwy 14 crossing of the Kickapoo River in flood, where a lad storms into the local tavern of rescue claiming "Bills' farm just washed down river." the Village of Soldier's Grove is destroyed in the flood and some years later is moved & rebuilt on the hill as "America's first Solar Village"

we hike into Death Canyon, have a moose encounter of a bad sort, mosquito encounter of the usual sort & the post trek "two dollar shower vs just keep on keepin' on" debate & fist fight! ah, youth! mirage on the road south of Hoback! oh wow man!
