Ascent Trip Report

Done along with Old Sugarloaf. Stats reflect both peaks. Parked at San Juan Trailhead in Hot Springs Canyon. Trail is well used especially by bicyclists. As a result much of the trail has narrow ditch that makes you walk as if you were asked to walk a line. Saw three other hikers and several dozen bicyclists. The overall grade of the San Juan Trail is very nice. Lots of switchbacks to get you up the first hill then gently graded along the ridge to the saddle between both Sugarloaf and Old Sugarloaf. We did Old Sugarloaf first. Well defined use trail, a little steep and overgrown in places, but easily climbed. View from Old Sugarloaf is very nice and unobstructed. After descending Old Sugarloaf followed San Juan Trail over to the use trail to climb Sugarloaf. This climb is about half of Old Sugarlaof. The true summit is atop a class 5 boulder that we did not climb. Interesting boulder formations on top.
