Ascent Trip ReportNo access issues through the base. Del Venturi road is closed so took Mission to Milpitas to get to the trailhead. The first part of the trail is flat but in many spots it is difficult to avoid standing water. The trail then gains the ridge quickly and no snow is really encountered until the trail switches to the north side of the peak.
Found one other set of footprints that looked to be from the day before, these ended about a mile from the summit where the several inches of snow had weighed down brush to the point it completely covered the trail. I pushed through this section and then really slowed down since I had to break trail for a few hundred feet in approach shoes (didn't need traction but boots would have been a better choice).
After going to the true summit I checked out the summit tower and then found a trail that went right down the west ridge back to the main trail. This is a far better option than the bushwaking route that went around and approached from the north side. From the main trail I couldn't see this junction but on the return I saw a blank piece of metal nailed to a tree at this junction. Hike out was quick and easy and didn't see another person the entire day. |
