Ascent Trip Report

Hiked with Dan and Richard Hamlin. This was my 13th winter peak of the Catskill 35ers. Trail up to turn off for Rusk was icy, needed microspikes. There's pretty much a well defined herd path going up Rusk nowadays. After a couple minutes of leaving the main trail to Hunter, I took off my microspikes. There was a little bit of snow, but mostly dirt, leaves, and rocks. We put them back on close to the top where the snow was mostly covering the ground. We met a couple other people along the way.

On the way up, I found a pair of what appeared to be prescription glasses hanging on a tree branch about chest height. I decided to take them with me to hopefully reconnect them with their owner. I was considering leaving them in the register box, but decided not to. I figured there was a better chance of them getting back to their owner if I took them with me and posted about it later. So, I left a note with my cell phone number in the book in the register.

Before I could post about it on Facebook, I got a text message just after 7PM from Birol in Garfield, NJ who said his friend has posted about his missing glasses yesterday. And someone else saw my note this afternoon, and saw the post on FB from yesterday evening. The friend on FB gave the glasses owner my number from the guy who saw it in the book. I was able to mail out the glasses to the owner! Success.

Also, Richard had left his Burton mittens half way up the hill. He took them off when we took off our microspikes. I changed over from warm mittens to light gloves at that point too. However, Richard forgot to put his mittens in his bag and didn't find that out until we were putting our microspikes back on at the trail to Hunter. He went back up and found them. He said it wasn't that hard because the path is so well defined and he had his GPS track too.
