Ascent Trip ReportAttempted to hike 12/29/19 - I thought the snow level would be similar to other west desert peaks or even like Frary Peak. Nope, wrong LOL! My Forester could only make it up North Oak Brush canyon a little bit, no where near to where Eric Willhite suggests parking and to start hiking. The snow got deep so I turned around and got stuck. Put chains on to get out - easy after that. Parked by the fence line. Aimed towards the ridge and began following that, however, snow covered grounds left me post holing and slipping on rocks I couldn't even see. I carried snowshoes, but it was never deep enough to wear on the start of the hike. My friend and I could never actually see the summit - clouds loomed over all morning. We kept on the ridge for a bit, but eventually avalanche danger began to ring in my head. I thought, "nope, this isn't good today." I told my friend my worries - all the steep chutes on the north slopes could easily slide at this elevation and we had a LONG ways to go. I wasn't up for scrambling on a ridge with the threat of avalanches. So we only made it up about 1.8 miles or so with 1400 ft gain and called it. Turned around, and followed our steps back. Not another person or animal in sight. Glad we went down because as we did so, the clouds socked in even more and it started to flurry. Even if we had summited, we wouldn't have been able to see a thing. Next time I would still take this route, but hope that with dry roads my Forester can make it up much further shortening the route. You wouldn't want to drive this in early spring when the road is wet (mud pit). The hike is further than it seems, and definitely not doable in winter. See ya in Spring, Black Crook! I will get you one day!
