Ascent Trip Report

Although reaching the highest point of Belgium can be done by placing ones foot outside of the car, to do so would be a shame...The top is located next to the nature reserve "Hautes fagnes" or "Hoge venen". This is a very beautiful area and deserves to be hiked before ending at Belgium's top.

We started our trip at the youth hostel in the town of Eupen. We parked our car there and followed the GR 573. After leaving Eupen the route takes you through nice forests, continuously following one stream or another. The second half of the hike takes you though the boggy area of the Hoge Venen. In winter and spring, be sure to have your boots waterproof as it will be very wet.

The last kilometers you follow unpaved roads leading to the stairs that are placed on top op Botrange. Be sure to try some of the finest Belgian beers in the restaurant on top!

After doing so we took the last bus back to Eupen where we spent the night in the youth hostel.
